How to change the perception of Mobile Discos?

I have asked myself this question so many times. How do we change the perception of Mobile Discos within the entertainment industry?

It's not uncommon to hear a horror story about a backyard mobile DJ operator who has just cancelled an event with a bride-to-be. This is something which irritates many professionals in the industry and many are working hard to change this perception. Thanks to people like Bernard Sutton Power (WA), Andrew McCarron (QLD), John Beck (VIC), Steve Bowan (NSW) and the list goes on...

But what can we do to stop this and why do I raise this question now?

I recently published a poll on our Facebook Page regarding the dreaded 'price' question for a Professional Mobile Disco and Master of Ceremonies at a wedding. Knowing all too well that the answers would be very widely varied, I approached this question from a different perspective, hoping to view comments, reply to peoples responses, and look at the people voting and see who were past clients, colleagues and unknown viewers.

The outcome is quite interesting. One specific comment referred to the idea that $500 - $700 was a fair amount for one day's work. And although this comment is perfectly valid my first thought was clear: People don't understand what a professional can put into their special day. We regularly spend days planning for a event and have many client consultations, coordinate with venues and spend countless hours perfecting our delivery of our role as a Master of Ceremonies.

It was also very interesting to note that a vast majority of past clients who have experienced our services first-hand voted the value to be much higher than the amount they actually payed for their services.

Now down to the point... How do we change this perception?

Step 1.
If you are a professional mobile disco operator you should be meeting with each and every client to give them a clear idea of the services you are offering. Show them the true value of what you can do for them.

Step 2.
Become a member of the DJ Alliance of Australia. The alliance sets minimum standards and if you are serious about being a professional you will be a member and promote this fact in your region. Visit www.djaa.com.au. Then make sure that your client is aware what the Alliance is and that you are a member, so that they can have more peace of mind.

Step 3.
Personalise each event. Make yourself, your team, unique. Deliver on what you promise and add a personal touch to show that you care. If you do something special for a client they are much more likely to mention you to others.

Step 4.
Show previous examples. It's a simple step but if you are a professional and competing with backyard operators who charge $250 you really need to show your clients what sets you apart. If you can't... rethink your business, your brand and find that key element that could give you the edge.

Step 5.
Be professional. This word is used too commonly but to be a true professional in our industry at a minimum you should;

- Have Public Liability Insurance (www.duckforcover.com.au)
- Be Licensed with the PPCA (www.ppca.com.au)
- Be a member of DJAA (www.djaa.com.au)
- Purchase Music Legally (NO EXCEPTIONS)
- Deliver on Your Promises
- Be passionate, skillful and experienced (Thanks Bernard Sutton Power)
- Have a Business Plan

And if you don't have these things ticked of your list, add them, seek help and ask questions on how to get to this standard.

Although these steps are quite simple to implement, are the backyard DJ's doing these things? Of course not! Then if you're not... ask the obvious question... are you a backyard DJ?

Prove me wrong and put into action these steps that will set you apart.

Selecting the right music for your next event doesn't need to be hard. Deciding if you choose a DJ or a Band, in most cases, is the first step.

There are a few things to consider when deciding which to choose and in some cases both can be a perfect option. Both a band and a DJ can play a variety of music and can build a great atmosphere. The question generally comes down to asking yourself "What audience am I expecting at my next event?"

This seems very straight forward but by getting an idea of the crowd you are expecting at your next event is the core reason to select either a DJ or a band. From our experience as an entertainment agency we try and give you the complete picture, by asking questions like "How many guests are you expecting?" - "What age group is your audience?" and finally "What style of music do you like?". This helps us paint a picture of your night and get an idea of the style of event you are having.

If your audience is widely varied and has a lot of different tastes in music a DJ may be more suitable. If you're planning a wedding where a Jazz or Swing band is the style you are after, a band may be more appropriate. Finally if your after a mix of both, DJs and bands commonly work together. As an example, you may want a Jazz group to play music at the beginning of the night and finish with a DJ to widen the variety of music.

A few interesting points...

- Bands can play a wide range of music. I have danced all night to a Jazz band playing classic 90's hits combined with new releases. Bands have the ability to read the crowd.

- Bands can be great for themed events. Imagine a 3 course meal in a sophisticated environment finishing of with a classical guitarist.

- DJs are no longer considered cheap and tacky. There are many professional groups who offer very high quality professional setups that suit any event.

- DJs usually carry a huge range of music to suit many styles. They can judge the mood of the crowd and adjust the music accordingly. They can also take crowd requests, whereas a band may have a limited set of music.

- DJs in some instances are professional MC's and do this for a living. Having a perfect introduction at a wedding reception or controlling a crowd for the announcement of speeches can be an art form and can make your special night run much smoother.

- Dancing with a DJ or a band will get everyone involved. There's nothing like watching your grandma do a rock-and-roll dance and then move on to an upbeat 80's classic - you just know your night has been a success.

In summary remember to ask yourself what kind of night do you want and what do you think your guests will enjoy. Although alternative music makes for an interesting night is it going to make it fun? This should help you narrow down the style of music you require.

Choosing a Mobile Disco Company can be quite difficult. It's very similar to choosing a DJ but there are a few things to look for that will make your night an event to remember.

Always consider the following:

- Does the mobile disco company have good reviews?
- Do they support the local community?
- Are they popular on forums and social media sites?
- Look for positive reviews and testimonials
- Is their website easy to navigate and clear on information?
- Do they look professional?

Master of Ceremonies - How to be a great MC

First of all, lets explain what an MC (Master of Ceremonies) is...

In simple terms an MC (Master of Ceremonies), is the host of a private function, event or performance. Their role is to present speakers, annouce speeches, talk to the audience and overall make sure the night runs according to plan and if at all possible to make the night personal to the audience.

This important position is generally considered a prestigious role for events such as weddings, corporate functions or performances. But don't worry, the role can be made very easy by considering a few points before the big event. And yes, before we continue any further, it is OK to make a few jokes while talking to break the ice. It not only makes you feel more confident it allows the audience to relax and get involved in the night. Just remember to be clever, not rude or obnoxious.

A few points to consider...

- Be organised
Don't worry if your not the organised type. Simply make relevant dot points and sit down with the appropriate people involved in the night to get a clearer idea of how it will all come together. The more you understand about the event, the clearer this will show in your presentation, announcements and speeches.

- Keep the night on track
Don't be afraid to keep the night on track. Your role is to make sure that speeches start at a specific time, that everyone is seated when meals arrive and to do the jobs that others may not be prepared to undertake. It may even be required to ask the bride and groom, in the instance of a wedding, to take their seat to be ready for speeches or meals. Another important point is to talk to the people responsible for the speeches ten minutes before they begin. Confirm they are ready and that the formalities of the night are about to begin. As master of ceremonies this allows them to have some time to compose themselves and have a toilet break if required.

- Be prepared to take a few notes on the night
As the master of ceremonies you will be required to introduce specific guests throughout the night. You may also be asked to thank a few people or make quick announcements. To simply solve this problem, make sure you carry a notepad and pen with you throughout the night. The last thing you want is to forget a specific person or introduce them by their wrong name.

- Speeches and Announcements
This is a small point to remember but it is always advised to keep speeches and announcements short. People attending a function generally like to enjoy a meal, talk to guest and listen to short sharp speeches. Have you ever heard someone say that "I thought that speech would never end"? Don't be afraid to tap them on the shoulder or even signal them by tapping your wrist. This is a professional way to move things along while keeping everyone happy.

- Pause at full stops
If you're nervous, which most of us are, remember to speak slowly and pause at full stops. Take your time and once you have started your nerves will relax and the rest of the night is easy.

- Be Clever
As mentioned earlier, be clever. Don't tell rude or obnoxious jokes. People may remember these but for all the wrong reasons. If in doubt about using a joke ask a friend or family member and if in doubt consider an alternative. A night will be remembered by the entertainment, meals and catching up with friends, family or colleagues, so being neutral and letting the other important areas of the night be the highlight is very acceptable.

This is a very common concern for people looking at hiring a mobile disco company or a professional DJ for their next event. This is even more worrying when it is your first experience in using a mobile disco company or a professional DJ. But don't worry, there are simple ways to help make this decision easier.

As a professional sound and lighting company ourselves we see all sorts of backyard businesses claiming to be DJs. The simple answer to "How To Choose a DJ" is to ask questions which will make you feel comfortable in what you can expect from them. After all the event is yours, and it should always be an event to remember for all of the right reasons.

Some simple questions to ask...

Q. Do you have a wide range of music?

Q. How much do you cost?
A. $375 - $675 AU. This naturally depend on the area you are located in. Events held in capital cities generally cost more. If you are including extra services in your booking such as travel, extra lighting or extra sound equipment this will add to your total cost. Remember that good companies may charge a little more as they use the best equipment and have a more professional looking setup. You can see the quality of a company through photos of their equipment and can generally get a clear idea from the look of their website.

Q. What is your experience?
A. A professional DJ will have worked in the industry for some time. They will play music that pleases the crowd, not music that they like. It's also good to have a DJ who has worked in a variety of settings and knows that every event is a different one.

Q. Can you give me a reference?
A. Testimonials from past clients are a great way of getting a clear idea of the DJs capabilities. There are many companies and DJs who have no reviews or testimonials. Look on their website or Facebook pages and you have to ask yourself "why"?

As an overall summary a DJ is generally a part of a mobile disco or sound and lighting company. Ask yourself does this company make you feel comfortable? Do they pass on pricing clearly and effectively? And do they seem professional? There is nothing worse than a company who has bright sign writing on the front of their setup if the occasion is a wedding.

Remember it is your event and it should be an event to remember for all the right reasons.
